Vapaa pääsy

Tervetuloa kokemaan kansainvälinen tanssiperformanssi

XBit Tornio kutsuu sinut kokemaan italialaisen taiteilijan Raffaella Menchettin teoksen Cat Care Calling, joka esitetään osana Forms of Presence -näyttelyä Galleria Kortteerissa.

Esitys järjestetään torstaina 5.11. klo 18.00. Tilaisuus on maksuton ja avoin kaikille kiinnostuneille.

Cat Care Calling on ajatuksia herättävä tanssiperformanssi, joka käsittelee julkisessa tilassa tapahtuvaa häirintää, kehollista muistia ja ihmisten välisiä valtasuhteita. Teos tarkastelee, kuinka häirintään liittyviä kokemuksia voidaan käsitellä taiteen keinoin ja muuntaa kohti huolenpitoa, ymmärrystä ja voimaantumista.

Esitys on syntynyt kansainvälisen yhteistyön tuloksena ja tuo Tornioon ajankohtaista eurooppalaista nykyesitystaidetta. Samalla se tarjoaa mahdollisuuden pohtia yhteisiä yhteiskunnallisia kysymyksiä taiteen, liikkeen ja kehollisen ilmaisun kautta.

Lämpimästi tervetuloa kokemaan esitys ja tutustumaan samalla Forms of Presence -näyttelyyn Esitys ja näyttely ovat osa kansainvälistä Professional Media Presence -hanketta.

Performance description

The expression catcalling, literally “calling the cat,” was originally used in 18th-century English theatres to express disapproval of performers. Today, it refers to verbal and gestural forms of harassment in public spaces, including whistles, unsolicited comments, sexist insults, honking, and offensive jokes.

Cat Care Calling is a dance performance based on the creation of a gestural vocabulary inspired by Bruno Munari’s Dictionary of Italian Gestures. Drawing on video interviews conducted by Raffaella Menchetti, the project explores the embodiment of gestures and voices associated with experiences of street harassment.

Through a choreographic practice that moves between irony and drama, the performer appropriates and transforms gestures associated with both those who experience harassment and those who perpetrate it. The body becomes a living archive of embodied gestures, questioning dynamics of participation, power, and responsibility.

The work raises a central question: How can an act of violence be transformed into an act of care?

Here, care is understood as a transformative practice capable of converting the energy of violence into strength, agency, and new possibilities. Cat Care Calling explores how gestures of harassment can be re-signified and transformed into gestures of attention, empowerment, and care.
